Air Conditioning in Cocoa Beach, FL Guide: Basic Air Conditioning Components

Monday, April 29th, 2013

We rely a lot on our air conditioners in Florida, for what seems like the majority of the year. But if we asked you how your AC works, or what its major components were, would you know? Like many of our most familiar household devices, the AC remains something of a mystery to many homeowners, despite having used them for years. We believe a better-informed customer is always a positive thing, and that’s why we’ve taken this post as an opportunity to explain the basic air conditioning components. • Compressor: The compressor resides in the outdoor unit. It takes a low pressure gas refrigerant from the evaporator and compresses it. This process creates a high temperature and high pressure gas that then circulates throughout the condenser. The compressor is responsible for pressurizing the refrigerant and controlling its flow.
  • Condenser: The condenser is a pattern of copper or aluminum coils that wraps the inside of the outdoor unit. Upon receiving the gas refrigerant from the compressor, an exhaust fan pulls outdoor air through the condenser coils in order to dissipate the thermal energy from the refrigerant. This interaction allows the refrigerant to condense into a much cooler liquid. From there, it moves to the expansion valve.
  • Expansion valve: This relatively small device controls the flow of high pressure liquid refrigerant coming out of the condenser coils, and disperses its density, turning it into a cool liquid. From there, this liquid cool refrigerant is ready to cool the air inside your home.
  • Evaporator: Like the condenser, the evaporator is actually a set of coils in the indoor air handler that accepts the cold liquid refrigerant and uses it to cool the warm indoor air drawn from your living space. This interaction makes the refrigerant inside the coils evaporate; hence, its name.

Besides the indoor air handler, which is controls the supply and return air movements by means of a blower, those are the major AC components. As you can see, the entire process is complicated and should only be handled by a certified technician.
